Abstract

Bruceloza u pasa primarno je uzrokovana vrstom Brucella canis koja ima ograničen
raspon domaćina koje inficira. Psi i divlji kanidi se smatraju prirodnim domaćinima, ali može
oboliti i čovjek. Primarni izvor infekcije su reproduktivni sekreti bolesnih životinja i životinja
kliconoša, ali i urin muških životinja. Bolest se najčešće prenosi spolnim putem, ali može se
prenijeti i direktnim kontaktom ili kohabitacijom, a inficirati se može svaki spolno zreli pas,
neovisno o spolu i o tome je li kastriran ili već prethodno korišten za rasplod ili ne. Klinički
znakovi bruceloze u pasa često izostaju ili su vrlo nespecifični, no posumnjati na bolest bi se
trebalo kod pobačaja naizgled zdrave ženke koji se javlja oko dva tjedna prije termina štenjenja;
orhitisa i epididimitisa praćenih neplodnošću, splenomegalije ili abdominalne
limfadenomegalije u pasa s diskospondilitisom, ili kombinacija nekih od navedenih kliničkih
znakova. Objektivna dijagnostika bruceloze u pasa iznimno je kompleksna; za potvrdu
dijagnoze nije dovoljan samo jedan, već se treba koristiti nekoliko seroloških testova u
kombinaciji s drugim metodama poput bakterijske izolacije i identifikacije i molekularnih
metoda. Unatoč dugotrajnom liječenju kombinacijom antimikrobnih lijekova i kastraciji
bolesnih životinja potpuno izliječenje u pasa je vrlo rijetko. Zbog niske uspješnosti liječenja i
zoonotskog potencijala uzročnika najčešće se predlaže eutanazija. Smatramo da je izuzetno
važno educirati i podići svijest veterinara praktičara o ovoj bolesti, olakšati procjenu mogućih
rizika te općenito omogućiti bolje poznavanje ove bolesti. Uz prepoznavanje i dijagnosticiranje
bolesnih životinja, odgovarajuće higijenske mjere, edukacija vlasnika i ljudi koji se bave psima,
te redovito serološko testiranja pasa prije međunarodnih putovanja, rasploda ili uvođenja u
uzgoj najznačajnije su preventivne mjere.

Abstract (english)

Brucellosis in dogs is primarily caused by Brucella canis, which only infects a limited
range of hosts. Dogs and wild canids are considered natural hosts, but humans are also
susceptible to infection. The main source of infection is the reproductive secretions of sick and
carrier animals and the urine of male dogs. The disease is most commonly transmitted sexually,
but can also be transmitted through direct contact or cohabitation. Any sexually mature dog can
become infected, regardless of sex and whether it has been neutered or previously used for
breeding. The infection is often subclinical. Disease should be suspected in the presence of
abortions in an apparently healthy bitch occurring about two weeks before parturition; orchitis
and epididymitis accompanied by infertility, splenomegaly or abdominal lymphadenomegaly
in dogs with discospondylitis, or when a combination of some of the listed clinical signs is
present. The diagnosis of canine brucellosis is extremely complex; multiple serological tests
should be used in combination with other methods such as bacterial isolation and identification.
Despite long-term treatment with a combination of antimicrobial drugs and castration of
affected animals, complete recovery in dogs is very rare. Due to poor treatment outcomes and
the zoonotic potential of the pathogen, euthanasia is usually recommended. It is extremely
important to educate and sensitise practising veterinarians so that this disease can be better
recognised and diagnosed. In addition to the identification and diagnosis of sick animals,
appropriate hygiene measures, education of owners and people involved with dogs, and regular
serological testing of dogs prior to international travel or entry into breeding are the most
important preventative measures.
