Abstract Brahicefalični opstrukcijski sindrom (BOAS) kompleksan klinički poremećaj koji
pogađa brahicefalne pasmine pasa, poput francuskih i engleskih buldoga te mopseva. Ovaj
sindrom posljedica je specifičnih anatomskih obilježja, uključujući skraćenu lubanju, sužene
nosnice, produljeno meko nepce i druge abnormalnosti koje dovode do otežanog disanja i
smanjene tolerancije na fizičku aktivnost.
Klinički znakovi BOAS-a uključuju inspiratorni stridor, stretor, hrkanje, dispneju,
netoleranciju
... More na tjelovježbu te mnoge druge. Osim respiratornih problema, psi često pate od
gastrointestinalnih poremećaja, poput regurgitacije, povraćanja i disfagije, kao i od poremećaja
spavanja, uključujući hrkanje i epizode apneje. Zbog progresivne prirode bolesti, simptomi se
s vremenom pogoršavaju, smanjujući kvalitetu života zahvaćenih pasa.
Dijagnosticiranje BOAS-a temelji se na kliničkom pregledu, slikovnim metodama
(RTG, CT, endoskopija) i funkcionalnim testovima.
eventualne kliničke manifestacije BOAS-a.
Prednosti 6MWT-a uključuju mogućnost ponavljanja, jednostavnost izvođenja i
mogućnost kvantificiranja kliničkih simptoma. Osim toga, ovaj test omogućuje praćenje
napretka bolesti, procjenu učinkovitosti kirurškog liječenja i bolje razumijevanje utjecaja
BOAS-a na fizičku sposobnost pasa.
Budući da je BOAS ozbiljan zdravstveni problem s velikim utjecajem na kvalitetu
života pasa, rano prepoznavanje i pravovremena intervencija ključni su za smanjenje simptoma
i poboljšanje prognoze. Implementacija 6MWT-a u dijagnostički protokol može omogućiti

Abstract (english) Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome (BOAS) is a complex clinical disorder
affecting brachycephalic dog breeds such as French and English Bulldogs and Pugs. This
syndrome results from specific anatomical features, including a shortened skull, narrowed
nostrils, elongated soft palate and other abnormalities that lead to breathing difficulties and
reduced exercise tolerance.
The clinical signs of BOAS include inspiratory stridor, stertor, snoring, dyspnea,
exercise intolerance
... More and many others. In addition to respiratory issues, affected dogs often
experience gastrointestinal disorders such as regurgitation, vomiting, and dysphagia, as well as
sleep disturbances, including snoring and episodes of apnea. Due to the progressive nature of
the disease, symptoms worsen over time, significantly reducing the affected dogs' quality of
life.
The diagnosis of BOAS relies on clinical examination, imaging techniques (X-ray, CT,
endoscopy), and functional tests. Among functional tests, the six-minute walk test (6MWT)
stands out as a simple, non-invasive, and objective method for assessing respiratory function
and physical endurance. This test measures the distance a dog can walk in six minutes while
monitoring respiratory effort, breathing rate, and clinical manifestations of BOAS.
The advantages of 6MWT include its high repeatability, ease of execution, and ability
to quantify clinical symptoms. Additionally, it allows for monitoring disease progression,
evaluating the effectiveness of surgical treatment, and providing a better understanding of the
impact of BOAS on exercise capacity.
Since BOAS is a serious health issue with a significant impact on canine quality of
life, early recognition and timely intervention are crucial for symptom management and
improved prognosis. Integrating 6MWT into diagnostic protocols can facilitate a more precise

evaluation of patients' conditions, assist in therapeutic decision-making, and contribute to better
veterinary care for brachycephalic breeds. Less
