Abstract

Upala središnjeg živčanog sustava čest je uzrok brojnih neuroloških bolesti u pasa. Ovisno
o lokalizaciji, upalne bolesti mogu se podijeliti na meningitis (upala moždanih ovojnica),
encefalitis (upala mozga) i mijelitis (upala leđne moždine) koje se mogu javiti samostalno ili češće
u kombinaciji (npr. meningoencefalitis, meningomijelitis). Etiologija ovih bolesti može se općenito
podijeliti na zaraznu i nezaraznu. Dok su zarazne bolesti središnjeg živčanog sustava iznimno
rijetke, nezarazne su puno učestalije te u najvećem broju slučajeva, imunološki posredovane što
predstavlja izazov u dijagnostici i liječenju. Naime, za definitivnu dijagnozu često su potrebni
invazivni zahvati poput biopsije moždanog tkiva koja se provodi u iznimnim slučajeva, stoga se
dijagnostika učestalo temelji na neurološkom pregledu, analizi cerebrospinalnog likvora te MRIu. Zbog mogućnosti samo pretpostavljene dijagnoze, kliničari često koriste termin
meningoencefalitis nepoznatog podrijetla (meningoenchepalitis of unknown origin, MUO) kao
radnu dijagnozu. Bolesti koje spadaju u podtipove MUO-a, zbog svojih sličnosti u kliničkoj
prezentaciji pa time i u dijagnostici i terapiji su sterilni gnojni meningitis/arteritis (steroid
responsive meningitis/arteritis, SRMA), granulomatozni meningoencefaltis (granulomatous
meningoencephalitis, GME), nekrotizirajući leukoencefalitis (necrotizing leukoencephalitis,
NLE), nekrotizirajući meningoencefalitis (necrotizing meningoencephalitis, NME) i idiopatski
eozinofilni meningoencefalitis (idiopathic eosinophilic meningoencephalitis, EME)

Abstract (english)

Inflammation of the central nervous system is a common cause of numerous neurological
diseases in dogs. Depending on the localization, inflammatory diseases can be divided into
meningitis (inflammation of the meninges), encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) and myelitis
(inflammation of the spinal cord), which can occur alone or more often in combination (e.g.
meningoencephalitis, meningomyelitis). The etiology of these diseases can generally be divided
into infectious and non-infectious. While infectious diseases of the central nervous system are
extremely rare, non-infectious diseases are much more common and, in most cases, immunemediated, which presents a challenge in diagnostics and treatment. Namely, a definitive diagnosis
often requires invasive procedures such as brain tissue biopsy, which is performed in exceptional
cases, therefore diagnostics are often based on neurological examination, cerebrospinal fluid
analysis and MRI. Due to the possibility of only a presumptive diagnosis, clinicians often use the
term meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO) as a working diagnosis. Diseases that fall
into the subtypes of MUO, due to their similarities in clinical presentation and thus in diagnosis
and therapy, are sterile purulent meningitis/arteritis (SRMA), granulomatous meningoencephalitis
(GME), necrotizing leukoencephalitis (NLE), necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME), and
idiopathic eosinophilic meningoencephalitis (EME
