Abstract

Zmije su u današnje vrijeme sve češće držane u zatočeništvu, bilo kao kućni ljubimci, bilo kao dio uzgojne kolekcije. U kolekcije dolaze iz različitih dijelova svijeta, kako iz uzgoja u zatočeništvu, tako i iz divljine. Pritom često promijene više vlasnika te budu u kontaktu s drugim gmazovima, najčešće na velikim sajmovima za prodaju gmazova. Takav način trgovanja u stvari pomaže u širenju različitih bolesti, pa tako i virusnih. Neprovođenje prikladne karantene te nedostatak vidljivih kliničkih znakova, često su uzrokom uvođenja virusnih bolesti u kolekcije. U ovom radu prikazane su najčešće virusne bolesti zmija. Opisane su bolesti značajne za zdravlje zmija, ali i one značajne za zdravlje ljudi, u kojima zmije služe kao mogući rezervoari ili posrednici. Brojna istraživanja govore o koinfekcijama te se opisuju konkuretne infekcije s više virusa istovremeno. Postavlja se pitanje pomoćničkih virusa te sinergističkog učinka nekih virusa. Potrebna su još brojna istraživanja koja bi dovela do proizvodnje komercijalnih dijagnostičkih testova za brzo i učinkovito otkrivanje najčešćih virusa u zmija tijekom karantene, odnosno prije uvođenja u kolekciju. Istraživanja bi trebala ići i u smjeru stvaranja cjepiva za najrazornije virusne bolesti kao preventivne mjere zaštite kolekcije.

Abstract (english)

Snakes are being held in captivity more often, either as pets or as a part of breeding collections. They are either captive bred, or wild caught and brought to a captive collection. They often change owners and are in contact with various reptiles on big reptile fairs. This type of snake trade contributes to spreading of various diseases, such as viral ones. Unappropriate quarantine measures, as well as lack of clinical signs, both contribute to introduction of viruses into snake collections. This paper offers a review of the most common viral diseases of snakes. It describes both the diseases important for snake health, as well as the ones important for human health where snakes serve as potential reservoirs or hosts. Coinfections have been mentioned in various research, describing concurrent infections with multiple viruses. It is possible that some viruses serve as helper viruses and that some of the them have snyergistic effects. More research will be needed in order to produce commercially available diagnostic kits for quick and efficient detection of the most common viruses in snakes during the quarantine, before introduction into the collection. New research should develop vaccines for the most devastating viral diseases as preventative measures for snake collections.
