Abstract

U današnje vrijeme vlasnici se sve više brinu za zdravlje svojih ljubimaca,
stoga veliku pažnju pridaju i njihovoj prehrani. To je dovelo do rasta industrije
proizvodnje hrane za ljubimce te velikog broja različitih prehrambenih režima. Sve
veća potreba za hranom posebice za ljude ali i životinje, u budućnosti postavlja
pitanje održivosti te utjecaja na okoliš. Brojna istraživanja utvrdila su da prehrana
koja se temelji na namirnicama biljnog podrijetla dugoročno puno održivija. Resursi
poput vode i zemlje troše se u puno manjoj količini te se koristi daleko manje fosilnih
goriva u odnosu na proizvodnju namirnica animalnog podrijetla. Navedeni razlozi, ali i
etički pristup prema životinjama, dovodi do toga da sve više ljudi prelazi na veganske
i vegeterijanske režime prehrane te često imaju slične ideje za svoje ljubimce. Zbog
toga na tržištu možemo pronaći sve veći broj vegetarijanskih i veganskih hrana za
pse i mačke. U prošlosti se smatralo kako je takva hrana nutritivno nedovoljna te
ukoliko se kućni ljubimci hrane na takav način to će eventualno dovesti do nutritivnih
deficita. Danas se na tržištu nalazi veliki broj takvih hrana nadopunjenih sa brojnim
nutritivnim dodacima za koje se kroz istraživanja dokazalo da su sigurne za ljubimce
te će u potpunosti zadovoljiti njihove nutritivne potrebe. Naravno ukoliko se odlučimo
na takav režim prehrane bilo bi poželjno voditi ljubimca malo češće kod veterinara
kako bi se pratio njegov zdravstveni status.

Abstract (english)

Nowadays people pay more and more attention to the health status of their
pets and there is also increased interest in their nutrition. This has led to the growth
of pet food industry and the development of different feeding regimes. The growing
need for food production, especially human food, but also pet food, brings up the
opic of sustainability and environmental impact of its production. Numerous
esearches have shown that food produced from plant sources is much more
sustainable than the meat-based food. Plant based food utilizes much less earth
esources such as land and fresh water and does not use nearly as much fossil fuels
as meat-based diets do. Because of that and some ethical standpoints (regarding
animal suffering in meat production) more and more people choose to become
vegetarian and vegan. Some of them try to translate their lifestyle to their pets as
well. On behalf of that a growing number of vegetarian and vegan foods for our cats
and dogs are available in pet stores. Previously, the general stance was that this kind
of food is not nutritionally complete and its consumption over a long period of time
will cause nutritional imbalances and nutritional deficiencies in our pets. Today there
s a lot of plant-based pet foods that have been enriched with many supplements so
hey became complete pet foods. Many researches showed that most of foods are
safe for our pets and if taken in recommended doses they will fulfill nutritional
equirements of our cats and dogs. Of course, if we choose that kind of food regime
t is advised to go for more frequent visits to the veterinarian for health checkups.
