Abstract

Selen je esencijalan element koji svakodnevno cirkulira prirodom i ključan je za održavanje različitih fizioloških funkcija u organizmu. Glavna karakteristika ovog esencijalnog elementa je vrlo mala razlika između količina selena koje će uzrokovati deficijenciju i onih koje će dovesti do otrovanja. Upravo taj fenomen čini rizik od otrovanja selenom vrlo visokim te su problem nestašice i otrovnosti problemi koje veterinari, nutricionisti i vlasnici životinja trebaju poznavati i razumjeti. Mnoga područja u svijetu imaju tla bogata selenom na kojem raste bilje koje sadrži visoke koncentracije selena i koje nakon ingestije može izazvati otrovanje. Budući da nema specifičnog liječenja otrovanja selenom, neophodno je provoditi edukaciju o mogućim štetnim učincima selena u cilju smanjenja rizika za životinje.
Bitan je za veterinarsku struku koja se susreće s njegovim pozitivnim i negativnim stranama. U svrhu sprječavanja deficijencija i posljedičnih bolesti, koristi ga kao dodatak hrani, a s druge se strane susreće se s njegovim negativnim posljedicama zbog vrlo visoke toksičnosti za životinje.

Abstract (english)

Selenium is an essential element that continuously circulates in nature and is crucial for maintaining various physiological functions in the body. Its main characteristic is the fact that there is a very small difference between the amounts of selenium that will cause deficiency and those that will lead to poisoning. It is this phenomenon that makes the risk of selenium poisoning very high and the problem of scarcity and toxicity are thus problems that veterinarians, nutritionists and animal owners need to be aware of and understand properly. In many parts of the world, there are soils rich in selenium that gets absorbed by plants in high amounts and can cause poisoning after ingestion. Since there is no specific treatment for selenium poisoning, it is necessary to educate people on the possible harmful effects in order to reduce the risk to animals.
Understanding selenium and its pros and cons is essential for veterinary experts. It is used as a food supplement in order to prevent deficiencies and consequent diseases. However, experts are also faced with its negative side because of its very high toxicity to animals.
